English

The Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio wanted and founded in 379 by the patron saint of Milan is located in Piazza Sant'Ambrogio. It is reachable by subway line MM2 Sant'Ambrogio or by line MM1 Cadorna . Before arrange a visit check the schedule on the site http://www.basilicasantambrogio.it.

The new church is ancient, but at the same time new, it was completely restored following the bombing of the Second World War.

After the entrance there is the quadrangle, a courtyard, initially reserved to the catechumens, those who were preparing for baptism and were not yet admitted to the rites, or to the penitents.

The facade is impressive, but made with typical materials of the farmhouses of the area. It has two loggias: the lower with three equal arches connected with the portico, and the top one with five arches.

On each side of the facade there is a tower: the right ones built by the Monks (VIII sec.) and the left ones built by the Canons (XII sec.). Why this distinction? In medieval times it was common to have more than one religious group in the same building, and probably a certain rivalry was born and each group wanted to build his tower.

Sfarzosissimi altare e ciborio.

The interior of the basilica is a mix of sacred and profane. The altar and ciborium are magnificent.

Particular is the fact that the church can be considered as a large family tomb, Ambrogio, his brother Satiro and his sister Marcellina are all buried here.

Ambrogio is buried in the crypt under the altar in a sarcophagus together with two other martyrs: Gervaso and Protaso.

The Sant'Abrogio charm lies also in its religious and pagan mysteries.

Once inside the church, after a few meters on the left, you will be in front of a column with a bronze serpent on it. According to tradition it is a Byzantine statue that Ambrogio reported by one of his trips in the East. The Milanese in front of it placed an identical column with a cross on top. According to legend, the Day of Judgment the serpent will come to life and will crawl to wrap around the cross.

Then take the time to visit the rest of the basilica, as it contains treasures of incomparable artistic value. With 2 EUR you can also visit the San'Ambrigio’s Treasury and especially the “Sacello di San Vittore in ciel d'oro. “ (Shrine of San Vittore with golden vault).

One last thing, when you leave, outside the church on the street corner there is a column with two holes on the side. It is called "Devil's Column". The two holes were caused by Beelzebub as consequence of the frustration for not being able to tempt the holy bishop.

23. Farsi ingannare dal trompe l'oeil più ingegnoso in Santa Maria presso San Satiro

23. Be fooled by the most ingenious trompe l'oeil in “Santa Maria presso San Satiro”

Italiano

English

Santa Maria presso San Satiro is at the beginning of Via Torino, not far from Piazza Duomo. By the way I recommend you to go there from Via Giuseppe Mazzini, after just around 100 meters you will find in front of you the tower and the sacellum of San Satiro. This is certainly the most characteristic angle of the whole church.

But first things first, what you see externally is the sacellum of San Satiro built in the ninth century, it has probably been built by Archbishop Ansperto before 879 and was dedicated precisely to San Satiro, brother of Sant’Ambrogio.

Now continue on via Speronari, you will be in via Torino, turn left and after few meters, in the middle of shoes and clothes shops, you will see flower stall, turn and you will arrive to a gate and the facade of the church.

The austere facade is a remake of that originally intended by Bramante.
The church was actually built between 1476 and 1482 to house a miraculous icon. The client was the Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza, for some scholars the designer was the young painter who moved from Marches first to Bergamo and then to Milan: Donato Bramante.

The real surprise is inside, go inside and look at the splendid colonnade behind the altar, you notice anything strange?
Now when approach slowly and when you almost under the altar move to the right or to the left.

Yes, this is just an optical illusion.
During construction, when it was already half done, the city council did not grant permission to break with the apse in the back street, because it was a very busy road.
For this reason Bramante decided to build this fantastic illusion and in only 97 cm was able to create the illusion of an apse with columns.

59. Farsi trascinare dalla movida in Sempione

59. Be dragged by the nightlife in Sempione

Italiano

English

After the transformation into pedestrian area, the last stretch of Corso Sempione, just to be clear the one from Via Canova to the Arch of Peace, has become one of the nightlife Milan areas.

In this stretch of road you could find several trendy clubs and restaurants.

Just to mention a few names, starting from Piazza Sempione you could find at sixteen of Via Bertani, the Freak Bar, at number two on the square the Leaving, super-trandy and super-crowded, at number two of Corso Sempione the Deseo, refined, warm and modern. Further, always on the right side, the Jazz Cafe, this is an historic club open since 1995, with its quiet “aperitivo” and its lively after dinner.

As background the Arch of Peace, a Milan’s landmark that was part of the ancient Porta Sempione ("Simplon Gate"), located in the center of the vast area of Piazza Sempione.

It was begun in 1807 by Luigi Cagnola engaged by the city council and Napoleon.

The architect was at two-thirds of the work when, following the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo, had to suspend it. In 1826 Francis I Emperor of Austria ordered the completion of the monument and dedicated it to peace.

On 8 June 1859, four days after the victory of Magenta, Napoleon III and Victor Emmanuel II made here their triumphal entry into Milan amid the acclamations of the crowd.
